Day two of our vinous adventure began, unsurprisingly, where day one had ended: Chablis. After a quick breakfast, we set about trying to find the inimitable Patrick Piuze (accompanied, incidentally, by a rather lovely sunrise).
I’ve been aware of Patrick Piuze for a few years now, and imagined that a brief walk through Chablis would take …

On November 21st, Bibendum’s Training Team packed up and headed to Burgundy for an educational extravaganza. Why Burgundy? Simple, really: if you can understand Burgundy, then you can understand Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from all over the world. And November is an ideal time to visit, since the sun-seeking tourists are long gone, the harvest is completed, …

Introducing the ultimate party pleaser, d’Arenberg The Cadenzia 2009. Aussies may be celebrating the holidays grilling burgers on the beach, but at least Australian producer d’Arenberg has parcelled up a Chateauneuf-du-Pape style red, packed with cranberries and spice to keep us smiling this chilly winter.

Domaine Gouges featured in Tears of God Manga comic
Burgundy has a stabilised style; and if change happens, it’s at a glacial pace. That is why it is so interesting to be there when a Domaine is in the process of changing hands from one generation to the next.

As all eyes turn to the slopes of the Rhone valley and the fruits of the 2010 vintage, Bibendum HQ was awash with some of the Rhone’s finest for Bibendum’s annual Rhone Tasting. So as the crowds descended on Primrose Hill we made a whistle-stop tour of the tasting to see what 2010 was all about.
Following a visit …

It is not every morning you taste 12 Grand Cru vintages before 9.30am. But by Day 3 in Burgundy our taste buds had become laser sharp to the nuances in the vineyard and we were picking the difference between Clos-de-Beze from Bonnes Mares at twenty paces.
Although the nature of the 2010 vintage made it easier to distinguish vineyards; unlike 2009s …

The story of the yields in Burgundy 2010
There were many explanations for the low yields in 2010 in Burgundy. If I had not seen the empty spaces for myself, the cynic in me may have thought this was a neat marketing trick to create demand.
After only two days in Burgundy, this proved to be wishful thinking.
Quantities in Burgundy …

Definition: Clos, from the French word for closure or enclosed, it is a walled vineyard used to protect the grapes from theft as well as improving the mesoclimate. They were often founded by Cistercian monks and the word is sometimes used in the name of famous wines even when the wall no longer exists.

I am a Rhone nut!
Not many people you know put on a tasting dinner featuring 17 Condrieu from the 1995 vintage at the Square. Epic! White Rhone is seriously underrated. White Hermitage is so much better value than White Burgundy. And it doesn’t look like the morning after the night before….
