Bordeaux En Primeur 2009 vs The Volcano

By Juel Mahoney, http://www.winewomansong.co.uk/

Bordeaux 09 at Lord's

Ejafjallajokull may have told Europe to kiss it’s ash during the week, but volcano or no volcano, the 2009 En Primeur show must go on.

No volcano was going to stop Bibendum’s annual Bordeaux tasting, nor the punters from tasting a good vintage nor the winemakers to show off a great year. Anthony Barton, …

Bordeaux 2009: They came, they saw, they tasted

Wednesday was one hell of a day. With the Eyjafjallajokull eruption leaving most of the chateau owners & winemakers stranded in Bordeaux it was left to Team Bibendum to hold the fort at home of cricket (you can insert your own Ashes and Lord’s gag here). A few hardy Bordelais did make it, including Christian Seely of AXA Millesime and our hero of the hour, Anthony Barton, who flew in by private jet. Mr Barton …

Bordeaux 2009: Thomas Duroux & Veronique Sanders

After a brief hiatus, it’s back to Bordeaux 2009.

Our tasting takes place on Lord’s tomorrow, and as I write we still don’t know if the Bordelais will be able to fly from Bordeaux to London tomorrow. Fingers crossed flights will be back up and running.

Even if the flights are cancelled, the show will go on. The wine is already here, the team are ready and raring to go and we are expecting a lot of …

Bordeaux 2009 – tasting the new vintage part 2: Médoc

Tasting at Chateau Saint-Pierre and Chateau Gloria

Tasting at Chateau Saint-Pierre and Chateau Gloria

Bordeaux 2009 is not an evident Left or Right Bank vintage. At the same time many of the wines that I like are from the Left Bank this year. The appellation Saint-Julien shows a high overall standard. But more important: all Bordeaux appellations, on both river …

Bordeaux 2009: Visiting the First Growths

One of the great things about primeurs week is the chance to go behind the scenes at some of the most famous names in wine. Visiting and tasting at the First Growths is brilliant fun, partly because the wines are usually amazing and partly because one gets to experience how each chateau presents itself. These visits are one of the best bits of my job and something I know is a privilege very few wine …

Bordeaux 2009 – tasting the new vintage part 1: Graves

Château Smith-Haut-Lafitte

Bordeaux 2009. Last week Jan van Roekel and I visited Bordeaux, running from the one château to the other to taste the young 2009 vintage. After the many signs of an unparalleled vintage our expectations were… high.

And yes, it was a joy to discover Bordeaux 2009. At the same time it was good to taste all …

Bordeaux 2009: Quotes from the critics

It is over a week since we touched down at Luton Airport following our trip to Bordeaux, and I’ve spent most of that time writing up the notes. How time flies when you are having fun. I’ve just handed a whopping 12,500 words over to our designers to put our offer brochure together and will start loading up the copy up to our website tomorrow.

I’m not the only one who has been writing up notes …

Bordeaux 2009: Saving the best ’til last

btimes1

After the hustle and bustle of the rest of the week, Thursday was pretty light. We had just four appointments, three with chateaux and one with Easyjet. This was the home stretch. We began at Haut Brion in the dark. Our appointment was for a rather early 8am but fuelled by the fear of getting lost in the back streets of Pessac (we …

Bordeaux 2009: Left bank traffic

By Gareth Groves

Hidden amongst the back streets of Pauillac

Hidden amongst the back streets of Pauillac

There is nothing like a minor hit and run accident to get things going in the morning. After a late night discussing Scandinavian monopoly markets with the Bibendum Europe team, we were behind from the word go on Wednesday.

Breakfast was …

Bordeaux 2009: All right on the night

By Gareth Groves

VCC

We have tasted some superb wines today – but also less than stellar numbers. After a near perfect hit rate amongst the big guns of the left bank yesterday, we have found a bit more inconsistency in St Emilion and Pomerol. The highs on the right bank are still very high indeed, but further down the scale you have …
