A Day of Unplanned indulgence

By Dan Coward

From this

From this

London, like any city really, is just as special for what isn’t obvious, as for what is. Living out in the country, as I do, a weekend trip into town is usually planned with specific goals in mind. This might be efficient, but it isn’t always exciting (it appears I have inherited a lot more …

Getting “Hands On” at St Hallett

By St Hallett, http://www.sthallett.com.au/

hands on T

Vintage in the Barossa, one of Australia’s leading wine regions, brings with it busy times, crazy times and if you’re lucky, fun and satisfying times. Working at a winery during this period is a unique experience and one often not shown to those outside the winery who enjoy the fruits of such labour, including media, customers and sales …

Liquid Dessert

By Denise Medrano, http://winesleuth.wordpress.com/

Very Old Stuff

Very Old Stuff

After a huge Christmas feast you’d think I’d have no room for dessert and you’d be right. BUT I did have room for liquid dessert, namely a glass or 3 of Andresen 40 year old Tawny Port. Andresen is one of the few family owned port houses remaining. Andresen was originally founded in 1845 …

Our Mexican Weekend

By Kirstie Papworth

IMG_9498

It was Simon Farr (Co-founder of Bibendum and masters its wine strategy) who decided we were going to spend a weekend in Mexico. Tim (Wine buyer and a fresh MW) and I, knackered by jet lag and a week of meetings, tried to persuade him otherwise, but we failed miserably. Just as well, really, or we’d never have discovered the beautiful Baja California, …

Spirits Team French Visit Part 1 – Samalens Armagnac

By Nick Rodgers

Samalens distillery

Samalens distillery

It’s a 5am start, and we’ve got a busy schedule for the next three days – a visit to our new Armagnac producers in Gascony, then it’s off to Cognac. Conveniently Easy Jet’s only flights to Bordeaux leave early Wednesday and come back late Friday night. Wait a minute, I obviously did not connect those words – ‘Easy’ …

See you in 2010

This is the 117th and last Random Bottlings post of 2009. I’m off to Scotland and Northumbria until the New Year armed with a corkscrew and a bag packed with great wine. Who needs clothes when you can fit in another bottle of decent Burgundy or some aged Tawny Port?

It’s been quite a year and it’s hard to think back over 2009 without thinking of the economy. Over at Bibendum Times, there have been two …

Petaluma to Pontet Canet – Fine Wine at the Annual Tasting

By Bibendumtimes

Fine-wine

Fine-wine

The Fine Wine room is always one of the busiest spaces at the Annual Tasting. Last year, I was pouring some of the wines there are we didn’t stop from 10am to 7pm. There was always someone queuing up waiting for a taste of Cheval Blanc or some top New World icon. We were mobbed – and expect to be this year …

White wine and dark chocolate

By Elloinos http://www.elloinos.com

slideshow_954928_darkchocolate

One evening a short while ago I was overcome by a sudden urge for really dark chocolate.  Personally I only enjoy chocolate with a minimum Cocoa content of 70%. For me the higher the better. I also prefer to eat dark chocolate cold and store it in the fridge.

Luckily I remembered that a few days back, my mother-in-law had given me some almonds …

A Wine for the Christmas Weekend (3): Calera Mills Vineyard Pinot Noir 2006

Picking a wine for Christmas is notoriously difficult. You have to weigh up the meat (turkey? duck? turducken?), pigs in blankets, the wine-hating cranberry sauce and the dreaded sprouts and that is before you have thought about who is coming, the price and how much you’ll need. In short, you need a wine that can be all things to all people and all foods – and they simply don’t exist.

So stuff the food and wine …
